A Day Trip to Ranthali

If you’re in Guwahati and looking for a unique cultural experience, a one-day trip to Ranthali, the famous Assamese traditional jewellery-making village, is a fantastic idea! Here’s how you can make the most of your day.

Morning: Depart from Guwahati

  • Start your journey from Guwahati by a van or a hired cab that suits your comfort. Enjoy scenic countryside views along the way.

  • After an hour's drive, stop at Jagiroad for a delicious meal of breakfast and a hot cup of chai before heading out. After another hour of travel, you will reach Ranthali, a little village in the Nagaon district which is famed for its traditional jewellery-making practices.

Noon: Introduction to Ranthali

  • On arrival, you shall be greeted by the locals. Find yourself a comfortable spot as you shall be introduced to the soul craft of this village. Learn about the history of Assamese jewellery and its significance in Assamese culture. After this briefing, you will be taken to a workshop where you can intently observe the process of making fine traditional jewellery. Do not forget to encourage the artisans for their hard work and creativity.

Afternoon: Lunch

  • After a session of learning about Ranthali and its specialty, the locals will serve you a delicious Assamese meal made in one of their kitchens. Have your lunch to your heart’s content and get ready for the next session.

Afternoon: Hands-on Jewellery Making Experience

  • Post lunch and after a little rest, try your hand at basic jewellery-making techniques like molding and engraving.

Interact with artisans and understand the tools used for filigree work and gold-plated designs.

Evening: Authentic Jewellery Shopping

  • Right after trying your hands at jewellery making, you can check out the wide variety of hand-crafted traditional Assamese jewellery and purchase handcrafted ornaments as souvenirs or gifts. You may also consider purchasing to boost the morale of local artisans and to further this local tradition.

  • The local women will serve you tea with some traditional Assamese snacks (pitha and laru) after which you shall start your return journey to Guwahati. Reflect on the rich heritage and artistry of Ranthali’s jewellery-making tradition. On arrival in Guwahati after two hours or so, you shall be dropped off at your desired locations.
